A Tale of Survival

Shyloh B

Guishyloh Boursiquot, or Shyloh, now a sophomore at Benjamin N. Cardozo High School, has recently made his debut into the world of published literary scholars. Shyloh’s How I Survived the Sixth Grade was published in May of 2013, and is now available on the Barnes & Noble’s website. Shyloh’s semi-autobiographical work depicts a reserved, introverted boy embarking on his middle school career. The protagonist overcomes challenges associated with unruly students, strict teachers, and a lack of confidence.

Shyloh wrote his initial draft during the summer of 2010, but he faced numerous obstacles during the publication process. Similar to the tale in his children’s book, Shyloh also prevailed despite his setbacks. He offers advice to rising students, “Don't let anything get in the way of what you love to do. My goal for this book is to inspire young kids to pursue their dreams. You shouldn’t limit yourself because anything is possible.” Shyloh’s timeless work of the transitional woes experienced in the sixth grade will continue to speak to young children as they near the brink of adolescence.

As a leader in his community, Shyloh devotes his time to his local YMCA for story time sessions. He plans to invite schools to Barnes & Noble and attend book fairs to promote his book’s triumphant message. Shyloh aspires to become a screenwriter and share stories filled with humor, fortitude, and inspiration.

Great work Shyloh!
