Michael Chung

Michael Chung is a senior at Tompkins High School in Katy, Texas, and is a member of the Tompkins Sinfonia Orchestra and the Houston Youth Symphony. He plays both the piano and the cello. He started piano lessons before age 5 and won various awards in many piano competitions including the Sonatina and Sonata International Youth Piano Competition, International Chopin Youth Competition, and the Steinway Piano Competition. He had the privilege of playing at Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall in New York City. He also studied under Mr. Chad Bowles and Mr. Alexander Shtarkman during the 2019 Johns Hopkins Peabody Institute Piano Week. In addition, Michael started to play the cello at age 11. He has been in the top orchestras at his junior high and high school. He has been a member of the Texas Region 23 Orchestras since 2016 and was the principal cellist in the 2017 Texas Region 23 Symphony Orchestra. He also won coveted spots in the Texas All-State Philharmonic and Symphony Orchestras from 2020 to 2022. He really enjoys making music with others, and he tutors both piano and cello students through Distanced Harmonies. Besides music, he enjoys tennis, computer programming, and video editing.
