Projects Abroad
“Projects
Abroad is proud to be associated with the National Society of High School
Scholars. We share the Society’s high objective for their members,
that they should at the same time better themselves and their world.
“Wherever the Society’s members may travel with Projects Abroad, whichever
program they choose to join, they will find they are really needed and they will
make a difference. They are also sure to have a life-changing experience
for themselves.
“And they
will be safe with first-class back-up from our world-wide organization.”

NSHSS is pleased to continue its partnership
with Projects Abroad, an international organization that provides exciting and
practical volunteer opportunities for students and their families in places that
need help the most. Volunteer programs operate in 17 different countries around
the world. The programs offered are very flexible; volunteers can choose their
own dates and duration. The programs run all year round, but summer programs are
a popular option. You can spend your summer helping whether it is on an
archaeological dig in Romania, teaching at a summer school in Togo, working with
turtles in Mexico. You decide how long you want to go away for and where you
want to go.
Why you should choose Projects Abroad:
Projects Abroad has worked with NSHSS so
that you get the best program for you as well as the best price. All members
and their families receive a 10% discount on the programs. As a lifelong
member, you (and family members) can participate in Projects Abroad at the
reduced price at any time.
Projects Abroad has expert staff in every destination so that someone is
able to help you out when you get overseas. Each destination has been
selected carefully with safety and security in mind. There is no need for
teaching or language qualifications. You will be fully supported by local
staff when you arrive. You will receive a full induction on arrival.

Member Mary Kapsac travels to Nepal and member Emilee Avery heads for Russia:
“After receiving an e-mail from NSHSS about Projects Abroad, I thought it
was too good to be true. I am only 18 years old and will be a freshman at
American University next fall, but I was looking for a way to have a
meaningful summer of service. I immediately contacted Projects Abroad and
signed up to teach English in Nepal for the entire summer. I believe that
giving back is a critical component to a meaningful life, and NSHSS and
Projects Abroad have provided me with an excellent opportunity to serve
others. I will be staying in the Kathmandu Valley and teaching at Bal Bikash,
a school for students from low castes or underprivileged backgrounds. I look
forward to sharing my knowledge and passion for learning with others in a
situation where I know I can make a difference. The students will vary in
age from 5-16. Although I am going to Nepal with the task of teaching, I
have a feeling that I will be doing a great deal of learning as well. I want
to learn about their culture, customs, language, and religious beliefs while
I stay with my host family. After the events of September 11th, I realize
that none of us can wait to try to make the world a better place. I hope
that my interpersonal skills, academic work, and good values will be used in
service of others all my life. A summer of service in Nepal is an excellent
way to start.”

“I will be attending the Projects Abroad
medicine program in Russia this summer. I found the description of Russia's
program to be very intriguing. I am 17 years old and I am from Boyertown,
Pennsylvania. I will be graduating from The Hill School in Pottstown,
Pennsylvania. I have always wanted to be a doctor and am attending the
University of Pittsburgh this fall to be enrolled in pre-med and hopefully to
major in neuroscience and biology. My dream is to attend and receive my graduate
degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and to one day
become a plastic and reconstructive surgeon. The program in Russia sounds like
it will give me to most opportunities pertaining to what I want in my future.
The program is located in a hospital in Moscow, and I will be working alongside
doctors and surgeons. They plan to take my future wishes into consideration when
placing me in the hospital, so that I may have to opportunity to witness some of
the things that I would like to do later in life.”
