Just like in high school, students must know their GPA and SAT score to get into college, and pre-meds should know their MCAT and MSC Scores to get into medical school. The Med School Competitiveness Score (MSC) determines how competitive a medical school applicant is.

MedSchoolCoach created this proprietary score by calculating thousands of data points from real med school applicants. The result? For the first time, pre-med students can now determine their odds of acceptance into med school.

Elite student applicants can see how competitive they are when trying to get into top medical schools. Meanwhile, students who might be on the fence can at least see their likelihood of acceptance into medical school since only 40% of medical school applicants get accepted anywhere. The MSC Score tool enables students to determine what they must do to stay ahead of the competition – regardless of the level of the schools they are applying to.

Dr. Sahil Mehta, the founder of MedSchoolCoach, created the Med School Competitiveness score. In this video, he explains how the MSC Score can help medical students plan their medical school journey:

Your MSC Score Indicates Your Likelihood of Med School Acceptance

Discover How to Beat the Competition – No Matter What Medical School You Want to Attend

Many factors are involved in the application process, and they can all play a role in gaining acceptance into medical school. Previously, there was no accurate way to measure the odds of acceptance. Today, the MSC Score makes knowledge of this information possible.

Your GPA and MCAT scores are crucial variables considered in the admissions process that are also part of the calculation, but they are just the start.

MedSchoolCoach advisors know from experience on admissions committees what the other key variables are: extracurriculars, research, clinical work, shadowing, volunteering, life experiences, where you went to undergrad, and if you're an underrepresented minority or not. These data points can be equally as crucial.

The MSC Score accounts for all variables and calculates a score that provides each student with an approximation of where they compare to other pre-meds.

What MSC Score Do Pre-Meds Need to Be Competitive?

An MSC Score ranges between 0 and 99 since no student could possibly be a perfect 100.

Typically, students who are strong candidates for medical school range between a score of 40 and 70. For students with a low score, they will learn their likelihood of getting into any medical school is none at all. Elite students seeking to get into a competitive program often score 65 or higher. For these students, their score provides insight on the importance of staying ahead of their peers to get accepted into a top program.

But, the MSC score is merely an indicator. One of several comparable indicators. Regardless of a high or low score, it does not account for how well a student interviews or how strong their personal statement is. Yet, it does provide a framework based on the student’s track record of academics and extracurriculars.

Tips and Tricks to Raise Your MSC Score

By the time a student discovers their MSC Score, there is not much they can do to change it. However, there are a few exceptions.

  • Raise your MCAT score – Let’s say a student scores poorly because of a low MCAT score. Retaking the exam and raising their MCAT score will increase their MSC score.

  • Have a remarkably strong application – Perhaps a student scored a 45 on the MSC score. Since only about 15% of these applicants will get into school, they must determine how they must be part of that 15% that gets accepted. These students must put together a strong application and write a remarkable personal statement in a package that stands out to be the best 45 scorer there is.

  • Interview like a champ – Let’s say a student scores a 90. Amazing! They’re a great applicant. But guess what? So did every student who is applying to an elite medical school. A 92 surely would provide an edge. Having a slightly stronger interview could give you that edge.

Once you get your score, it’s all about how you structure yourself, perform in the interview, write your personal statement, and tell your story. Those are the things that MedSchoolCoach physician advisors and mentors help students convey.
