Delmar Wilson
Delmar Wilson has been a public school educator for eighteen years, teaching mathematics, AP Computer Science Principles, and Cambridge Thinking Skills at Miami Springs Senior High. In addition to his teaching role, he serves as the Mathematics Department Chair, ESSAC Chairperson, Union Steward, and Head Boys Varsity Basketball Coach.
While working on his doctorate in 2013, Wilson recognized the lack of minority representation in computer science. In response, he created an AP Computer Science Principles course and actively recruited ninth-grade students—many of whom had never considered taking an AP course or studying computer science. Over the years, the course has grown in popularity, becoming a student favorite. Last school year, he further expanded opportunities by establishing the Computer Science National Honor Society.
One of Wilson’s guiding principles is inspired by John Dewey’s quote: “If we teach today’s students as we taught yesterday’s, we rob them of tomorrow.” He believes that 21st-century educators have a responsibility to prepare students for the future by equipping them with the necessary skills to become leaders. As a veteran teacher, he continues to advance computer science education, leveraging the CS Honor Society to engage students and promote awareness during Computer Science Education Week.
NSHSS is providing one $500 grant to be used during 2025 to help defray costs of educational conference registration, travel, and accommodations.
