Scholar's Day in D.C. 2023

NSHSS members, families, educators, and partners are invited to come and be honored at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in Washington, D.C., on Friday, August 11 & Saturday, August 12, 2023!

This two-day educational conference will feature several educational workshops, a college and career fair, and countless networking opportunities.

At Scholar's Day, NSHSS families will have a chance to learn more about all of the benefits of NSHSS membership, including $2.5 million in scholarship opportunities yearly, access to an extensive network of university, educational, corporate, and government partners, and, of course, the lifetime network of fellow NSHSS members. This prestigious event is a celebration of academic excellence, where each member in attendance will be honored for their academic achievement!

  • 1:00 PM - 6:00 PM: Check-in & Onsite Registration

    1:30 PM - 5:00 PM: College & Career Fair

    Members were able to meet and explore opportunities with corporate, educational, and government leaders from renowned organizations and universities around the globe!
  • 1:30 PM - 5:00 PM: NSHSS Pop-Up Store

  • 3:00-4:00 PM Welcome Reception

    Attendees enjoyed light hors d’oeuvres and networking with other NSHSS members and educators.

  • 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM: Opening Address & General Sessions

    Scholar’s Day D.C. 2023 kicked off with a welcome message from NSHSS President and Co-Founder Mr. James Lewis, followed by event announcements, and opening sessions by Army ROTC, the CIA, and CollegeAdvisor.com!

  • 5:15 PM - 5:45 PM: U.S. Army ROTC

  • 5:45 PM - 6:15 PM: The CIA - “The CIA – Protecting the Nation and You”

  • 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM: NSHSS Member Party

    NSHSS members celebrated with a casual welcome party featuring a DJ, games, networking bingo and prizes, and desserts!

  • 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM: Parent Meet & Greet with The Princeton Review - “Do the SAT and ACT Still Matter In College Admissions?”

    Following the Welcome Reception, students danced the night away at their member party while parents were invited to a “Meet & Greet” and informational session with The Princeton Review!

  • 6:15 PM - 6:45 PM: CollegeAdvisor.com - "Starting Early to Stand Out: College Admissions in 2023”

  • 7:00 AM - 2:30 PM: Check-in & Onsite Registration
  • 8:00-9:00 AM: Networking Breakfast

    Attendees were greeted with coffee and a continental breakfast!
  • 8:00 AM - 2:00 PM: College and Career Fair

    Attendees heard from multiple well-respected professionals about what they are looking for from the next-generation workforce and how to build important skills to be prepared to make the transition from academic success to career achievement.

  • 10:15 AM - 11:00 AM: Breakout Sessions

    Multiple workshop offerings were hosted by NSHSS partners. Attendees had the option to choose between educational workshops based on their interests.

    Attendees heard from multiple NSHSS scholarship winners on how they made their applications stand out from the rest of the applicant pool and provided valuable tips on showcasing academic and community accomplishments.

  • 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM: Keynote Address - “Live Your Life Like a GPS: Resilience, Self-Discovery, and Purpose”

    Attendees heard final thoughts of inspiration from the closing speaker Duncan Kirkwood.

  • 4:00 PM - 4:30 PM: Remarks from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
  • 4:30 PM - 6:00 PM: Awards & Member Recognition Ceremony

    Educators of Distinction and scholarship recipients were awarded, and members heard congratulatory remarks and received their own NSHSS honor medallion for their academic achievements!

Keynote Speaker: Duncan Kirkwood

Duncan is an author, Veteran, and global resilience advocate. He has spent his professional life working to empower young people, educators, organizations, and communities. His mission is to ensure everyone can learn the critical tools to become the most resilient and best version of themselves.He is blessed to be a husband and father of three. His passion is helping individuals push through their perceived limits to take control of their futures.
Education Background: BA Communications Alabama State University, MPA University of Arizona, and Army National Guard Master Resilience Trainer
