Evan Howells

St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Secondary School
Whitehorse, Canada

Evan Howells, 17, conducted the first Yukon study comparing pollen foraging of native bumble bees with apiary-based honey bees in natural landscapes. Findings from his three-year study will help guide further management practices to maintain local native bee populations. To raise awareness of the needs of native bumble bees, Evan shared his findings with the government, stakeholders, and the public. Evan received three national awards for his research and advocacy work: the 2023 Nature Inspiration Award (youth category) from the Canadian Museum of Nature, the 2023 Pollinator Advocate Award for Canada from the North American Pollinator Protection Campaign, and a senior medal at the 2023 Canada Wide Science Fair (CWSF). Evan mentored students with their science fair projects, judged at his regional science fair, and tutored and volunteered weekly at the hospital’s information desk. Evan was a member of his school’s senior volleyball, basketball, and rugby teams. Outside school, he played on Yukon’s U18 Futsal Team, winning gold at the 2024 Arctic Winter Games. Evan was also a Yukon’s U17 Badminton Team member, competing at the 2023 Arctic Winter Games and the 2023 Canada Winter Games. At university, Evan will be pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree.
