Alan Mao is a senior at BASIS Independent McLean whose work bridges finance, technology, and social impact. He is the founder of SettleSmart, an interactive multilingual tax-filing platform that has helped over 1,500 immigrant and low-income families navigate U.S. tax obligations.

Alan also hosts Landing Point, a cross-cultural podcast amplifying immigrant voices through interviews on education, housing, and finance. His research at Michigan State University explores wage disparities in higher education using Mincer-style regression analysis, and his business team has twice reached the Diamond Challenge Global Finals for social innovation.

Beyond academics, Alan leads his school’s Business & Finance Club, directs TEDxBASIS Independent McLean, and serves in OCA-Asian Pacific American Advocates, organizing youth equity and anti-hate initiatives. He has also earned eight gold medals in national Wushu championships, reflecting discipline and resilience both inside and outside the classroom.

Alan plans to pursue a career in social impact finance, building accessible financial infrastructures that empower families and communities worldwide.
