How High School Students Are Publishing Research and Getting Into Top Universities

When Sadaf started the YRI Fellowship, she had never written a research paper. No lab access, no faculty advisor, no experience with academic publishing. Ten weeks later, her paper on neural network optimization for real-time classification systems was published in IEEE.

That publication became the centerpiece of her college applications. She was admitted to Brown University, Johns Hopkins, and UT Austin - the latter with $128,000 in scholarships.

Sadaf isn't an outlier. At YRI, 87% of students produce publication-ready manuscripts within 10 weeks. Our students have published in IEEE, Springer Nature, Elsevier, and ScienceDirect. They've become ISEF finalists, won science fairs, and built applications that stand out at the highest level.

Why Published Research Changes the Equation

Top universities want intellectual vitality - the ability to ask original questions and pursue answers beyond the classroom. A peer-reviewed publication does that in a way no AP score or extracurricular list can. It shows admissions committees you can think at a collegiate level before you arrive on campus.

The problem is access. Most students can't get into university research labs. Cold-emailing professors rarely works. School science fairs don't lead to journal publications. And competitive summer programs are limited in spots and often don't result in published work.

How YRI Bridges the Gap

The YRI Fellowship matches each student with a PhD mentor in their field of interest. Over 10 weeks, the student and mentor develop a research question, conduct the study, and produce a manuscript ready for journal submission. YRI handles journal selection, submission, and responding to reviewer feedback.

Students commit 5-8 hours per week. No prior research experience is required. The program accepts students in grades 7-12.

Students who need additional time receive extended support at no extra cost. The program is built around outcomes, not hours.

Mubashir S. at Karachi Grammar School built a gravitational wave classifier using a novel peer-to-peer distributed training framework. His IEEE publication earned him a spot as an ISEF 2026 Finalist - selected from 1,800+ finalists across 80+ countries. He started with zero research experience.

Suriya D. joined as a 9th grader with no lab access. His research on deep learning for Alzheimer's detection through eye-tracking was accepted at IEEE EMBC 2026 in Doha, Qatar - the world's top biomedical engineering conference.
