In today’s fast-paced world, the transition from college life to the professional workforce can feel overwhelming. Many students face uncertainty as they step into new responsibilities, expectations, and environments. 

In a recent podcast, Eljin Rhymes, an accomplished young professional, shared his personal journey along with practical insights to help students navigate this important phase with confidence and purpose. 

From Scholar to Professional 

Eljin’s journey began in Oakland, California, and took him through Montgomery, Alabama, before settling in Tallahassee, Florida. As a 2015 NSHSS member, he reflects on how the organization exposed him to opportunities that he did not fully recognize at the time. 

He shares: 

"It was really only after high school that I started to realize all the opportunities, connecting with students from far and wide." 

His experience highlights the value of building meaningful connections early. Networking, collaboration, and staying open to opportunities can shape both academic and professional paths. 

The Power of Internships 

Before entering college, Eljin had already secured two internships during high school. These experiences played a key role in launching his professional journey. 

He worked with the City of Tallahassee Utilities and the Black State Legislative Office, gaining early exposure to real-world environments. He also credits the Tallahassee Future Leaders Academy for providing valuable career insights. 

These experiences demonstrate an important lesson for students. Early exposure to professional settings can build confidence, develop skills, and open doors to future opportunities. 

Balancing Academics and Athletics 

In college, Eljin faced the challenge of balancing rigorous engineering studies with his role as a student-athlete. Managing both football and academics required discipline and resilience. 

He recalls: 

"Trying to balance both worlds was definitely a challenge." 

During the COVID-19 pandemic, he shifted his focus more heavily toward academics, which ultimately led to securing more than five internships. He worked with well-known organizations including Lockheed Martin and NASA. 

His story illustrates how adaptability and focus can turn challenges into opportunities for growth. 

Transitioning to the Professional World 

Moving from college to a full-time professional role brought a new set of challenges. One major adjustment was maintaining relationships and adapting to a different daily structure. 

Eljin emphasizes the importance of time ownership: 

"When you own your time, you're able to cater to what you want to do." 

Taking control of your schedule allows you to prioritize personal and professional goals while maintaining balance. This mindset helps reduce stress and increases productivity during a major life transition. 

Key Skills for Success 

Eljin highlights two essential skills that students can carry from school into their careers. 

Effective Note-Taking 

Writing things down helps strengthen memory retention and encourages deeper understanding. It also supports critical thinking and organization in professional settings. 

Asking Questions 

Curiosity is one of the most valuable traits in both academic and professional environments. 

Eljin explains: 

"The best thing you can do is ask. Nine times out of ten, you're always going to get someone that wants to help you." 

Being willing to ask questions not only improves learning but also builds stronger connections with mentors and colleagues.
