Deitra Hoang
Deitra Hoang is a senior at Gunderson High School in San José, California. She is the President of the Gunderson Speech and Debate team, a varsity player on the girls’ tennis team, and is a student artist in her school’s ceramics program. Outside of school, Deitra is an appointed official on the San Jose Youth Commission—the official youth advisory board to the Mayor and City Council. This year, she serves as the Chairperson and District 3 Commissioner. She writes policy memorandums regarding public safety, gender equity, and environmental advocacy and hosts citywide events and initiatives to engage youth. In September 2023 at age 16, she passed her first law that made local government more accessible to socioeconomically disadvantaged youths. Deitra also hosts her own podcast under Only in San José and interviewed experts from foreign countries about digital addiction, corporate policies, and consumer protection. In Fall 2024, she will be attending the University of Pennsylvania and plans to major in International Relations.
