Melissa Hawley is the Mathematics Department Head at Hiwassee Dam High School in Murphy, North Carolina, where she brings passion, dedication, and a genuine love of learning to every aspect of her role. A natural leader both inside and outside the classroom, Melissa serves as Chairman of her school's National Honor Society chapter, guiding high-achieving students in scholarship, service, leadership, and character while spearheading meaningful community initiatives including monthly food distribution volunteering and senior center outreach.


Recognized by the Mathematical Association of America as the Host Coordinator for the AMC 10 competition, Melissa is committed to expanding academic opportunity for her students beyond the traditional classroom setting. She also serves as an assistant coach for both cross country and track and field, channeling the same values of perseverance and goal-setting she cultivates in her math students into the athletic arena.
From organizing fundraising efforts as a Prom Committee member to advising the school yearbook, Melissa's dedication to her students and school community is evident in all she does. She is honored to be an NSHSS grant recipient and is proud to put this award directly to work for the students she serves every day.

Grants Awarded in 2026: School Supplies Grant

NSHSS is always looking to find ways to support our network of educators, especially those who are constantly looking to support their students. To help offset the financial burden, NSHSS is giving four (4) high school educators $500 grants to help provide additional opportunities to their students and classrooms.
