2018 NSHSS Academic Paper Awards: How to Apply
It’s that time of year again! Applications are now open for the NSHSS Academic Paper Awards.
Each year, the National Society of High School Scholars recognizes 25 high school students who have written outstanding and noteworthy academic papers ranging from essays to research papers. Topics will vary from student to student but the overall goal is to recognize those with exceptional skills in academic writing. In order to apply, you must be an NSHSS Member in high school or dual-enrolled in high school and college. Winners will be awarded $250 and have their work published on the NSHSS website.
Have Your Work Published on the NSHSS Website
Though the cash prize for winning this award may draw many students’ attention as they gear up to pay for college, another perk is having your work published on the NSHSS website. This is an excellent way to gain visibility either as you move into college or as you start the college application process. We assemble a digital booklet each year of the winning essays that can easily be shared and is a great way for you to gain recognition for your work.
What Can I Submit?
One of the big bonuses of this award is that you don’t have to spend any time writing something new because the submission requires a paper or essay that was assigned and submitted for a high school class. You may submit a paper from a college class, though, if you are dual-enrolled in both high school and college.
Fiction, poetry, journal entries, computer programs, and lab reports are not acceptable submissions, but research papers, analytical papers, and original essays are.
Whether it’s a research paper from your science class on black holes or an essay from your English class on themes of two of your favorite novels, take the time to submit them to the academic paper awards because you just might win. Winning papers are selected based on how well it addresses a particular assignment, with material presented in a clear and thoughtful way in your own voice.
How to Apply
All eligible NSHSS Members are invited to apply on their Member Dashboard before the deadline on May 1st, 2018. All academic papers must be submitted in English and as either a word document or pdf.
Application Requirements:
- Title of the paper
- Brief description of the assignment
- Name of the class
- Term/year when the class was taken
- Name of the teacher who assigned the paper
- Email address of school counselor
If you are dual-enrolled, include the name of your college professor from your college course, the college at which you are enrolled, and the name of your high school.
Open Date: March 1, 2018
Deadline: May 1, 2018
Method of submission: Upload a copy of your essay on the online application as a Word document or pdf. Essays must be submitted in English.
