Jennette ReFour Relects on her Experience as a NSHSS Summer Intern
My name is Jennette ReFour, a lifetime member of NSHSS in my sixth year of membership. The National Society of High School Scholars has benefited me in so many ways from helping me excel in high school to helping me excel now in my last year of undergraduate. I currently attend the University of Georgia, one of NSHSS’s collaborating universities, where I am a triple major in Criminal Justice, International Affairs, and Psychology.
The day I joined NSHSS, it allowed me to surround myself with the best of the best and gave me a chance to meet other students with whom I knew I would be connected for years to come. Many NSHSS members were even interested in law enforcement and careers with the CIA like I was. During my junior year of college I was reconnected with the society again when I was selected to be a NSHSS summer intern. Not only was I appreciated for my abilities, I was able to work side by side with the working hands of the society. The internship taught me several business skills, such as multi-tasking, communications and problem-solving. They also gave me the opportunity to attend the annual Scholar’s Day event in Washington, D.C.
At the event I had the pleasure of listening to Mr. Claes Nobel’s incredible speech regarding the power of our current youth. It was a great honor. I also took it upon myself to stop by the college and career fair to network with the U.S. Department of State, which was an enlightening experience. Since the internship, NSHSS has given me such a network of connections. I have been placed in conferences with recruiters from the Central Intelligence Agency, Deans of schools from different universities, and board members from the American Association for Blacks in Higher Education. Furthermore, I know that other networks are only a call away for the society.
NSHSS has been such a friend to me in previous years and I am grateful that my membership is for a lifetime. I have recently shared some great news with the society and I am very excited for my next adventure. Stay tuned!
