Stem Scholarships

STEM, or Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, seems to have become a bit of a buzz acronym in recent years and for good reason. STEM represents a broad field of work that pervades every part of our lives and as we continue to become a more tech-reliant society.

For this reason, students will be expected to have capabilities in STEM far beyond what was expected of previous generations.

Opportunities in STEM Fields

We encourage those heading into college undecided to explore STEM fields because a large gap is developing between jobs available and those with the skill set to fill those jobs in STEM. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce’s study of STEM jobs in 2017, employment in STEM occupations is expected to grow much faster than employment in non-STEM fields; 8.9% growth for STEM fields and 6.4% for non-STEM occupations. This same study also found that STEM workers earn higher wages than their non-STEM counterparts, earning 29% more than those in non-STEM fields.

As you can see, there are quite a few reasons to pursue a career in STEM like low unemployment rates and higher wages. There are what seems like an endless number of career options for someone considering STEM, but some of the fastest growing STEM occupations include biomedical engineers, systems software developers, computer systems analysts, and medical scientists.

Access Rewarding STEM Scholarships

NSHSS is joining other institutions in incentivizing careers in STEM by awarding five STEM scholarships for High School Seniors in 2018. These $1,000 scholarships will be given to NSHSS members who plan to major in a STEM field, including any area related to the medical field. Application requirements include a personal statement of 500 words discussing why you have selected your intended STEM major and your future career plans related to this major, your resume, transcript, and an educator recommendation. Visit our page on scholarship applications for tips and advice on preparing these items.

We hope that these rewarding scholarships for high school seniors pursuing a career in STEM will help those students who are passionate about a career in STEM achieve their dreams. For those that are new to the idea of a career in STEM, we encourage you to take a closer look at some careers that might be right for you. An education in a STEM field will be good to have for the world of today and tomorrow.
