Sofia Gonzalez Honored with NSHSS Educator of the Year Award
Sofia Gonzalez, an English teacher at Morton East High School in Cicero, Illinois, was recognized for being honored with the NSHSS Educator of the Year Award.
She was nominated by a student who highlighted Sofia's passion and dedication in her work as an educator. Beyond Sofia's inspiring role inside the classroom, she has created Project 214, a nonprofit that helps promote education in areas of need.
Sofia has also developed her own "Snowball" club, which is a group intended to emotionally support students who have challenges that are not always academically related. Her recognition is a reflection of her humble background and relentless drive to help students grow and thrive.
As a 100% Latina teacher, Sofia's mother is Puerto Rican and her father is Mexican. From a young age, she knew she wanted to be an educator; however, she never imagined she would be named NSHSS Educator of the Year.
"As a minority, for me, I felt like receiving this award is an opportunity for me to represent my culture and broadcast my message of justice and equality for everyone; especially for at-risk youth."
Inside this classroom at Morton East High School is where her work as a teacher has impacted not only the students of Cicero, but also on an international level.
Along with the award, she received $5,000 that she used to expand Project 214, taking her mission to Latin American countries in need, like Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Puerto Rico.
