NSHSS partner UPS offers a wide variety of internship opportunities for college students. Read Pamela’s story below.
From Internship to Career
Shortly after graduating from Georgia Tech, I was hired into the UPS Internship program. Originally looking for real-world HR experience, I ended up gaining understanding and knowledge in so much more than what I expected. The internship provided me with answers to questions that I didn’t know I had, like “Do I want to work in a large corporation?”, “What is truly valuable to me in a career, aside from compensation? Do I value the culture of a company? Are the quality of the working relationships important to me? Is the availability of growth opportunities a value that I would prioritize?”, etc. I learned almost as much about myself as I did about HR. By the end of the internship, I had answers to all of my career questions and I knew that UPS was the place for me.
After my internship, I was hired on Full Time as a Project Management Specialist. In this role I was trained in the standard project management curriculum and was able to shadow and provide project support to Senior Project Managers while also learning from their application of Project Management practices. After just a few months of training and supporting Senior Project Managers, I was given ownership of a project and was able to put my skills and training to the test. The Project Management team was always there for support, ongoing training, and constructive feedback.
After, 7 months I was promoted into the Order To Cash Process group. I am currently responsible for Social Media Customer Service as well as Channel Communications. This new role is even more dynamic than my previous one, providing me with continuous learning and developmental opportunities and challenges. I am also, once again, surrounded by team members who are eager to contribute as needed to my growth and development, as well as to support me as a new member of the UPS family.
A year after graduating, I have found myself at a company that showed me what I truly valued in a career and then provided it to me in a positive yet challenging work environment, in which it is only natural to thrive. It all started with my internship.
