Collaborative Learning Strategies For Teachers

Behind every great student…is a great teacher.

NSHSS supports educators who truly inspire their students to academic success. In this article, we highlight some of the NSHSS educator grants that any teacher can apply for.

In addition to the following general grants for educators, we also offer specific awards in areas like STEAM, A.P., and DEI.

The full list of grants for teachers can be found here.

Please note that the application window has closed for some awards for 2023, but these grants are renewed each year.

Educator of the Year Award

Top Award (1 award): $5000

Finalists (9 awards): $1000

This award is the broadest of the NSHSS educator grants and is available to any teacher who exemplifies teaching best practices and leadership in education.

While there are also many specific educator awards in specializations such as STEAM, A.P. and DEI, there is no reason that your experience in those areas could not provide the basis for your application for the Educator of the Year Award.

Another approach might be to draw on more than one area of your teaching experience when writing your application essay – thus demonstrating your versatility as a strong educator.

Experiential Learning Grants

Awards (6): $1000

As the proverb goes, “Give a man a fish, and he eats for a day.  Teach a man to fish, and he eats for a lifetime.”

This award recognizes that hands-on experience is the best way for students to process and internalize classroom learning.  We also recognize that these types of experiences take extra effort on the part of the educator – they require imagination, planning, and implementation.

Share a compelling story of how you facilitated a lesson for your students that handed them the reins of learning with unique, hands-on experience.  Don’t forget to mention how students were able to reflect upon this experience and incorporate it into their overall learning.

School Supplies Grant

Awards (15): $500

The National Center for Education Statistics estimates that 94 percent of teachers have to buy supplies for their classroom.

We know that your dedication to orchestrating a great lesson sometimes means that you have to donate some of your modest income to buy supplies.  These fifteen awards are designed to defray some of these additional costs.

Be sure to share a story of a successful lesson that required out-of-pocket expenses to make a reality.

Conference Grants

Awards (5):  $500

Educators should be life-long learners, and we want to encourage you to pursue your continuing education as a teacher.

This grant helps defray the costs of registration, travel and accommodations for academic conferences.

Higher Education Grant

Awards (2):  $2500

Another way to continue with professional development as an educator is to enroll in college courses.

This award helps educators pay for tuition so that they may improve and hone their teaching craft.
