Sahar – international PhD student from Iran
I absolutely knew nothing about Perth about 2 years back when I embarked on my PhD life here. I had just a blurry vision of the city based on what I had seen on the internet. However, Perth never fails to defy your expectations by being greater than what you have ever heard about it.
From day one of my arrival, I was so obsessed with the ruggedly beautiful sceneries of Perth. This experience got started with the dazzling campus of the UWA, from the eye-catching sandstone buildings to the picturesque gardens with lots of hidden stories. This was only the beginning, and I still can’t get enough of the serene shoreline of white sands, beautiful foreshores in Matilda Bay, and south Perth, and Fremantle’s remarkable ambiance with a combination of art, culture, music, and friendly vibe around the place. Perth is located at the coast of the Indian Ocean and it welcomes you with an amazing Mediterranean climate throughout much of the year that makes the outdoor activities so enjoyable. Besides, Perth residents can enjoy more sunshine hours as it’s the sunniest capital city in Australia.
This was only a touch of environmental examples that due to the great geographical location impressed me. Perth has a lot more to offer. It’s ranked the sixth most liveable city in the world in 2021 which is evaluated based on healthcare, culture and environment, infrastructure, and stability. Thanks to being one of the most significant mining regions in the world, the economy is rapidly growing which provides great business investment opportunities and also makes the job market thrive.
Education-wise, the UWA is ranked among the top 100 world universities and provides state-of-the-art facilities for research and education. Besides, some of the top schools in Australia are located in Perth. Generally, Perth is designed very walking, and cycling friendly. In terms of cleanness and pollution, Perth can be considered one of the bests. It’s also worth mentioning the free inner-city public transport!
Compared to other Australia’s big cities, Perth is chilled out in a good way. It has its own share of advantages and that’s why the city could get a high score in the stability index which is the indicator of the prevalence of crime, the threat of terror, unrest, or conflict. I believe you can now tell how safe Perth is. To appreciate how good Perth is for living, it might be enough to know that we barely were affected by the recent COVID-19 pandemic due to tight border controls that caused relatively normal lives for residents. What else can we ask for?
The list of the positive points of Perth, the 6th most livable city in the world, goes on and on. That’s why it has become one of the most popular places for most people, particularly students, to study and live :)
