Jacob Sauls

James W. Lewis, for whom this scholarship is named, has dedicated his life and work to a commitment to a plethora of virtues. The two virtues that I think I best embody are a commitment to community engagement and volunteerism and creating leadership among youth. I will continue to encapsulate these virtues and uplift and inspire those that come after me. As I have gotten older, my greatest fear has evolved. Now I not only fear being average because I want greater for myself, but because I want greater for those in my city that come after me. I want to set a precedent of excellence in my town, as opposed to the current trend of mediocrity, so that one day kids from Escondido won't have to grow up against the same odds I did.
