Barnard Pre-College Programs

Barnard College of Columbia University is an undergraduate college for women located in New York City. Since 1889, the College has been devoted to providing a rigorous liberal arts education to driven young women.

The High School Pre-College Programs offer female-identifying students entering their sophomore, junior, or senior year of high school the opportunity to experience all that Barnard College and NYC has to offer.

Programs
Barnard Pre-College offers five summer programs. Take our BuzzFeed quiz to find out which could be the right fit for you!

Summer in the City offers one-week or four-week opportunity for students to take college-level courses, experience the Beyond the Gates Career and College Prep series, and enjoy excursions and activities throughout NYC.

S-Cubed Summer STEM Seminars offer two-week courses with a lab component for students to sharpen their skills, learn from Barnard faculty, and engage in excursions and activities in NYC.

Young Women’s Leadership Institute explores the relationship between gender and leadership as students participate in two weeks of courses, workshops, and site-visits to develop their leadership skills.

Dance in the City allows students to learn about dance as a scholar, dancer, choreographer, and audience member through two weeks of experience in the classroom, studio, and theater.

Athena Summer Innovation Institute is a ten-day bootcamp to provide young women with entrepreneurial skills. Students participate in workshops, meet successful women entrepreneurs, and work with a team to create their own venture.

NSHSS
Special scholarship funds have been allocated for NSHSS members. Apply by March 11th to be considered for these scholarships.

Who is Eligible?

Female identifying students entering their Sophomore, Junior or Senior year of high school in Fall 2020. Students must be at least 14 years of age by the first day of their summer program.

International Students

International students are welcome to apply to our summer programs. Our programs are non-credit bearing therefore international students do not require a student visa to attend. Our office will provide all international enrollees with a letter of admission and detailed scheduled to apply for a tourist visa.

Tuition

2 Week Day Student-$4,995                

2 Week Resident- $5,750

4 Week Resident- $9,165

4 Week Day Student-$6,875

Resident Student Tuitionincludes room and meals in the campus dining hall, textbooks and course readers**, MetroCard for duration of program*, (1) Broadway ticket, NYC excursions, Columbia gym membership, $95 campus medical fee.
Day Student Tuition includes meals in the campus dining hall, textbooks and course readers**, (1) Broadway ticket, NYC excursions, Columbia gym membership, $95 campus medical fee.

*Participants are responsible for replacing lost or stolen MetroCards
** Students in Contemporary Studio Art and Architecture of the Everyday will need to purchase additional course supplies on their own. A list will be provided by the professor a month prior to the start of the program.

Admissions

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis beginning on December 1st, 2019
Priority Deadline (application fee is waived during this period)- Monday, January 20th, 2020
$75 application fee -Tuesday, January 21st- Wednesday, April 15th
$125 application fee -Thursday, April 16th- Friday, May 15th (space permitting)

  • (1) Teacher/Guidance Counselor Recommendation Letter for rising Junior and Senior applicants

              ○ (2) Letters of Recommendation for rising sophomore applicants

  • (1) short essay on one of the following writing prompts

  • List of Extracurriculars (if applicable) 

Financial Aid Application
The Office of Pre-College programs offers a limited amount of need- based financial aid awards. Financial Aid applications will be available beginning on Sunday, December 1st- Friday, February 28th. All financial aid applications must be submitted with your parent/guardians 2018 tax returns and/or any other supporting financial documents in cases where your parent/guardian is not required to file a tax return
Program Deposit
A $500 deposit is required for all accepted students within two weeks of their admissions notification. Students who fail to submit their deposit within two weeks will automatically forfeit their admission to their summer program and any financial aid award that they have been granted towards their tuition. ​Tuition must be paid in full no later than May 31st, 2020.
