NSHSS handpicks its partners carefully, searching for nonprofits, organizations, and companies that directly align with our mission to provide the best resources for our members and their families. We may receive compensation from our partners, at no cost to you.

In 2010, NSHSS established the Earth Day competition to honor and recognize high school students who are making a difference in their home, school, and community through environmental awareness initiatives. In 2012, that competition was expanded by a grant from the Captain Planet Foundation, which is continuing its support of these awards through the NSHSS Foundation.

Our shared commitments to bettering the environment through these awards increases awareness around Earth Day and Captain Planet Foundation’s work to support the environmental leadership of high-achieving high school students and high school educators throughout the U.S. and abroad. The Earth Day Award competition opens in the spring annually. Please see the NSHSS Scholarships page for more information.

The mission of the Captain Planet Foundation is to give the next generation of environmental stewards an active understanding and love for the natural world in which they live. For more information on their unique programs for children, youth, and educators, visit

“I was thrilled to attend NSHSS Scholar's Day at the Carter Center and present the Earth Day awards for the environmental work of two amazing scholars, Rachael Pence and Kamon Tsvetkov. I was also excited to announce that Captain Planet Foundation will partner with NSHSS and sponsor the 2014 Earth Day Competition. I really look forward to knowing about the incredible student-led programs and projects that are making a difference in schools and communities around the world. After all, every person can make a difference and we hope the Earth Day Competition will encourage every student to take action.”
