NSHSS Celebrates Counselors: Jenny Arledge
February 2-6, 2015, is National School Counseling Week, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA). NSHSS and our scholar members recognize and salute the vital work high school college and guidance counselors do in preparing young people for success in school, work, and in life. We appreciate the impact professional school counselors have in shaping and supporting the aspirations of dedicated scholars, and we are proud to recognize outstanding counselors through our Educator of Distinction and Educator of the Year Programs.
In honor of National School Counseling Week, we are proud to recognize the efforts of Jenny Arledge, a Director of College and Career Readiness at Sulphur Springs High School in Sulphur Springs, Texas. Jenny is a 2014 Educator of the Year semi-finalist. She has over 20 years of Career and Technical Education teaching experience, Educational Technology Leadership training, and she has completed coursework and training for Principal Certification. Earning two degrees at Texas A&M University-Commerce, she received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree and also a Master’s in Educational Technology Leadership. She has taught Microsoft Excel Community Education courses, and she is also a Children’s Ministry Director.
Jenny quotes John Dewey in explaining her teaching philosophy: “If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow.” Jenny’s adoption of Dewey’s progressive mentality is exemplified as she describes herself as a “facilitator of student-centered instruction.” Jenny’s belief in prompting independent thought coupled with her technological background creates an ideal environment for her students to fulfill their educational and personal goals both during and beyond their high school education. Jenny has been nominated as an Educator of Distinction three times. Her students describe her as “the hardest working woman in the school” and “always having a smile on her face, bringing life and joy to the classroom.”
